Duke Start-up Challenge: Elevator Pitch Competition Finals

This is a long overdue post.

On November 12th, Duke held its 5th annual Elevator Pitch Competition finals.

The winner of the $5,000 Judges’ Choice Prize was Nooch.
The winner of the $1,500 Audience Choice Prize was Advisync.

Interestingly, they were both led by undergraduate teams. It’s great to see that so many undergradutes participated in this year’s event.

The Duke Start-up Challenge held its 5th Annual Elevator Pitch Finals at the Fuqua School of Business in front of an audience of about 400 to 450. This year’s special guest speaker was David Thacker ’97, an Associate Partner at Greylock Partners. Eighteen of the most talented and ambitious Duke entrepreneurs pitched their ideas in front of the audience and a panel of judges. Each competing team had exactly 1 minute to sell their idea and answer 1 question from the judges for a chance to win the $5000 Grand Prize.

Meghan, Fuqua ’11 and I co-hosted the event.

Other judges at the event were:

Tom McMurray ’76, ’78, ’80. Founder and President of Marine Ventures Foundation (MVF) and former General Partner at Sequoia Capital, Menlo Park, California.

Christy Shaffer, Ph.D. Entrepreneur, Biotech Executive, and Former CEO of Inspire Pharmaceuticals, Durham, North Carolina.

Peter Heffring. President and CEO of Expion, Raleigh, North Carolina.
